NBA draft pick Dwight Powell started out at North York high school

He was then quickly traded to the Cleveland Cavaliers along with Brendan Haywood in exchange for Alonzo Gee.

Powell only suited up for the North York high school for his Grade 9 year when, like so many other Canadian hoop stars before him, he went to a U.S. academy at 14 years of age.

It paid off with Powell just finishing a four-year U.S. college scholarship with Stanford University – and now on to the NBA.

Another one of the four Canadian draft picks also suited up for a Toronto high school. Brampton native Tyler Ennis, selected 18th by the Phoenix Suns, started his high school years at Etobicoke’s Father Henry Carr CSS before he, too, went to a U.S. prep school.
