When it comes to winter driving, it’s best to prepare before leaving your driveway. The following 8 winter pre-trip tips are courtesy of former Toronto police officer and On The Road columnist Fergie Reynolds.
1. Windows: Keep all the windows – front, side and rear – clean and clear from snow, ice or dried-on road dirt.
2. Wipers: Make sure they are in good condition and free from hardened snow or ice to allow proper contact with the glass.

3. Fluid: Keep the fluid topped up and the jet nozzles clear to ensure the fluid reaches the windshield.
4. Lights: The rule is to see and be seen. Two working headlights and all tail lamps, signal and brake lights must be in good condition. Keep all lights clean and clear from ice and road grime.
5. Mirrors: Keep both sideview mirrors clear to allow a clear view to the sides and rear. This will help to ensure safer lane changes.
6. Tires: Must be in good condition with proper tire pressure and lots of tread-life remaining. Consider a good-quality snow tire as a better winter option.

7. Braking distance: Leave extra room to stop safely; snow, wet roads, black ice or quick-freeze conditions will significantly reduce the distance it takes to safely stop a vehicle.
8. Speed: Obey the speed limits and drive according to road and weather conditions, even if that means driving at less than the speed limit. Extra speed means extra stopping distance.
Having investigated many winter-time accidents over the years as a traffic police officer, Reynolds believes many could have been avoided by simply paying attention to the eight tips listed above. Remember, winter weather can bring instant changes to road conditions and motorists need to meet those safety challenges by adjusting their driving to the current conditions and ensuring their vehicle is both properly prepared and equipped.
