Upper Beach resident Kathy Sayers is being remembered this Saturday, Nov. 29 with a bake/preserve swap in her honour.
Sayers, who for several years ran a home daycare and was known and loved by many in the community, died of cancer Dec. 1, 2013 at the age of 63.
Fiona Bramzell, whose now 13-year-old daughter Paige attended Sayers’ daycare, is organizing the Kathy Sayers Bake Swap and Social in honour of her daughter’s caregiver and her good friend.
"(Kathy) practically raised my daughter. We were really, really close," Bramzell, a single mom whose family is overseas, said during a recent interview.
"We actually spent a couple of Christmases at her place."
Bramzell said Christmas was a favourite time of the year for Sayers, who enjoyed decorating her home and running an annual cookie exchange.
"She really loved Christmas. It was her thing," said Bramzell, who started planning the swap/social in mid-October and in recent weeks has reached out to several of Sayers friends and acquaintances to invite them to the event.
People from the community who knew Sayers and would like to attend the Nov. 29 event are welcome.
"I’m hoping people don’t just come in and go out," Bramzell said, adding the event is all about sharing memories and stories about the many ways Sayers impacted the lives of those in the community.
The Kathy Sayers Bake Swap and Social will be held Saturday, Nov. 29 at Kingston Road United Church, 975 Kingston Rd. at Scarborough Road, from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m. Those interested in taking part in the swap should arrive a few minutes early.
People are asked to bring a (homemade or store bought) baked treat or a homemade preserve to be swapped as well as $5 donation for the Hospital for Sick Children.
Non-perishable food is also being collected for the food bank.
The event will also include tunes by local musician Mark Battenberg, refreshments and prize draws.
