Surround yourself in the world of art and history this summer at the Village of Islington’s Mural Mosaic, where larger-than-life outdoor paintings surround buildings to tell the tale of Etobicoke’s past.
Visitors are encouraged to tour the 26 works of art that covers 15,000 square feet along Dundas West between Islington and Kipling avenues. The project began in 2004, initiated by the Village of Islington BIA to distinguish and beautify the business district. To date, the project has drawn in hundreds of visitors – with another 1,500 expected this year.
The colourful murals look like photos; yet each one was painted to depict important people, events and places from the area’s history.
John Kuna has been the primary artist behind the murals, but Sarah Collard as well as representatives from Arts Etobicoke and Creative Village have also contributed.
The village participates in the city’s annual Doors Open event in May with food, music and trolley tours of the Mural Mosaic. People can book a tour by emailing info@villageofislington.com
Touring the murals is free, so pick a sunny day and head to the Village of Islington. You may even find a commissioned artist working away at the BIA’s next mural, which will be painted on 5134 Dundas W. and showcases golf at the Islington Club. Visit villageofislington.com
