COVID TRACKER: How many ICU beds are occupied by COVID-19 patients in York Region?

As the situation changes, those numbers now come with a warning. 

With the rapid rise of the highly transmissible Omicron variant and the province shifting its COVID-19 testing to high-risk or symptomatic people, the region is changing its interactive COVID-19 dashboard. 

"Many health units are now faced with the reality case data reported externally is not a true representation of emerging cases," Patrick Casey, York Region director of corporate communications, said. 

In fact, the case counts posted daily by York Region Public Health "are an underestimate of the true number of individuals with COVID-19 in York Region".

Case counts should be interpreted with caution. 

"Daily case counts will only reflect a particular piece of the overall picture of COVID-19 transmission," Casey said. "The numbers will be an undercount of the true burden of illness in the community and will not accurately reflect transmission rates and community risk."

The actual number of cases is expected to be much higher as Omicron continues to spread, he added. 

While YorkRegion.com will continue to monitor the number of positive COVID-19 cases as reported by public health, the focus will shift to our hospitals and the strain on resources posed by COVID-19. 

Here, you will find the number of COVID-19 cases in each of York Region’s four hospitals as well as how many COVID-19 patients are in an intensive care unit (ICU).

Of the 30 hospital patients with COVID-19, 7 patients are in ICU in York Region – making up 6.3 per cent of current ICU beds as of March 15.

There are 5 COVID-19 patients in ICU beds at Mackenzie Health, including 3 at Cortellucci Vaughan Hospital and 2 at Mackenzie Richmond Hill; 2 at Southlake Regional Health Centre in Newmarket; and 0 at Oak Valley Health in Markham.

Oak Valley Health, which includes Markham Stouffville Hospital and Uxbridge Hospital, reports its COVID-19 numbers Monday, Wednesday and Friday, while the other hospitals report daily Monday through Friday. 

As of March 15, York Region public health reported 99,261 confirmed PCR positive COVID-19 cases.

Public health has reported 594 cases in the last seven days. 

On March 15, the region reported 118 new infections, up from the 65 cases reported the day prior. 

Of the 118 new positive COVID-19 cases reported, 26 were unvaccinated; 1 had one dose; 45 had two; and 46 had three doses.

Of those five years and older in the region, 85.0 per cent have received two doses.

Of those 12-years and older in the region, 55.6 per cent have received three doses.

York Region Public Health has reported 98,034 resolved COVID-19 cases as well as 930 COVID-19 related deaths.
