Two owners of a Thornhill-based custom stairs company are among three people charged by Ontario Provincial Police for a fraudulent purchase of lumber from a business in Erin.
The owners and an associate of City Stairs in Thornhill allegedly purchased more than $100,000 worth of lumber from an Erin lumberyard in August 2021. A week later, the victims were advised the transactions had been made using fraudulent credit card information.
Approximately $80,000 of the lumber has since been recovered.
The accused were arrested Jan. 25.
Reuven Shmilov, 40, of Richmond Hill, and Herzel Shmilov, 39, of Vaughan, and Ruufat Chalmiev, 40, of North York, are charged with possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000, trafficking in stolen goods over $5,000, laundering proceeds of crime and fraud over $5,000.
