Cases of COVID-19 continue to spread in Toronto and the rest of Ontario.
Due to current restrictions limiting access to PCR testing, official COVID-19 case counts are not capturing all suspected cases.
Here are Toronto's latest COVID-19 case numbers, based on data released by Toronto Public Health.
In Toronto, as of March 15: 392 confirmed and probable new cases and two new deaths, for a total of 292,385 cases and 4,111 deaths, with 2,788 active cases, 77 people currently hospitalized and 22 people in the ICU in the city. Toronto Public Health is noting that due to quality assurance work resulting from the Omicron surge, newly reported case counts until mid-April will include additional cases from December and January. On March 11, a total of 165 deaths were removed from Toronto's overall count due to a change in reporting that excludes deaths where the cause was found to be unrelated to COVID-19. Toronto Public Health releases its numbers on weekdays by 4 p.m.
The Ontario Ministry of Health's latest numbers, from March 15 (announced March 16), note 2,011 confirmed cases, 2,060 resolved cases and 15 new deaths, for a total of 1,129,543 confirmed cases, 1,101,842 resolved cases and 12,288 deaths in the province. On March 11, the province changed reporting for deaths to exclude COVID-19 deaths where the cause of death was found to be unrelated to COVID-19, which removed 411 deaths from the total count. The ministry releases its numbers each day at 10:30 a.m.
Due to a technical issue, a breakdown of vaccination status for the new cases was not available from the province.
There were 39 new hospitalizations reported in Ontario, with 649 people in hospital currently testing positive for COVID-19 and 204 people in ICUs due to COVID-19. Of the people in hospital with COVID-19, the ministry noted 47 per cent were admitted for COVID-19, while 53 per cent were admitted for other reasons but tested positive. Of the people in the ICU, the ministry noted 79 per cent were admitted for COVID-19, while 21 per cent were admitted for other reasons but tested positive.
In Canada, as of March 15, there has been a total of 3,373,339 confirmed cases, 36,990 deaths and 3,222,451 resolved cases. Currently, there are 113,898 active cases reported in the country. The Government of Canada updates its numbers daily at 7 p.m. The first reported case of COVID-19 in Canada was in Toronto on Jan. 25, 2020.
