Being a teenager in today’s society is not for the faint of heart; parenting a high schooler can be just as tricky.
Humberside Collegiate Institute’s parent advisory council hopes to be a support to both parents and their teens as they navigate the adolescence. The council is hosting a parent information night entitled ‘Keep Your Teens Healthy and Confident’ Wednesday, Nov. 26 from 7 to 9 p.m. in the school’s Lismar Hall, 280 Quebec Ave.
"The pressures that are out there, especially from the social network, are non-stop," said council co-chair Lisa Strucken.

The talk will help parents whose teens are dealing with such challenges as peer pressure, cliques, bullying and high-risk behaviour like drinking and drug use.
The event will be facilitated by the Parenting Network’s Doone Estey, a certified parent educator and parenting expert. She is co-author of the book ‘Raising Great Parents, How to be the Parent Your Kids Need You to Be,’ and has raised four children. Estey teaches as many as 10 parenting courses a year at such institutions as Upper Canada College, Royal St. George’s College, and North Toronto Collegiate, among others.
The stronger relationship you have with your teen, the likelihood he or she will be able to make smarter choices, said Strucken, whose two older children have graduated from Humberside and whose youngest still attends.
The information talk was made possible by a Ministry of Education grant for use as an education proponent for parents, said advisory council co-chair Debra Bettio. The council sought input from fellow parents and Humberside Collegiate’s principal in determining what kinds of topics should be discussed.
