Leaside’s local councillor John Parker has renewed a call to extend Redway Road to Bayview Avenue, linking the need for such a project to the tragic death of Georgia Walsh last month.
Leaside’s local councillor John Parker has renewed a call to extend Redway Road to Bayview Avenue, linking the need for such a project to the tragic death of Georgia Walsh last month.
Extending Redway south from Millwood Road "would provide a safe and practical alternative route for commuter traffic that currently uses the streets of Leaside as part of its journey," said a motion Parker brought to the City of Toronto’s public works committee this week.
There has been a city proposal since 2000 to extend Redway, which ends in a Loblaws parking lot west of Millwood, to the northern end of the Bayview Extension, south of Moore Avenue, but Parker said the work was never done, "for reasons unrelated to technical feasibility."

Walsh, age six, was struck and killed crossing the road by a van turning from McRae Drive onto Millwood during the afternoon rush hour on July 16.
Parker said there are many commuters on Leaside streets who don’t want to be there, and Leasiders don’t want them there either.
"The proposed bypass would reduce traffic on both McRae and Millwood. The need now to take constructive action to do so could not be clearer," said his motion, which asks the city’s transportation department to look at the Redway project again.
It added the extension would provide trucks with another way to access the Leaside Business Park in addition to removing a bottleneck.

Beaches-East York Councillor Janet Davis responded the extension can’t be considered in isolation. The effects it may have on surrounding streets must also be part of the study, she said.
