The union representing Toronto Transit Commission workers has fired its president and upper management, leaving the Amalgamated Transit Union Local 113 in “temporary trusteeship.”
The move came the morning of Friday Feb. 3, and the parent-union has promised to issue a statement in the early afternoon.
Metroland Media Toronto has contacted Local 113 – where a receptionist confirmed that the union is in receivership – but not yet heard any details of the removal of what some reports say is as many as 17 people from the top of the union, including its president Bob Kinnear.
The union represents TTC drivers and other workers. Mayor John Tory, asked about the removal at a Friday morning event, said he didn’t believe it would affect service.
“Far be it from me to get involved in the politics of the transit union, but I would say that the most important thing we can say to the people of Toronto is that transit service will continue under the management of the TTC, which is what people really care about,” he said. “The union will sort out its situation in due course.”
