It could take up to eight hours for crews to repair a broken gas line near Kingston Road and Victoria Park Avenue.
As a result, up to 4,500 Toronto Hydro customers in an area bounded by St. Clair Avenue to the north, Queen Street East to the south, Main Street to the west and east to Kennedy Road could be left without power.
Birchmount Recreation Centre at 93 Birchmount Rd. is open as a service area for those left in the dark as well as the more than 100 people forced to leave their homes and places of work because of the gas leak, which also forced the evacuation of the nearby Neil McNeil High School at 127 Victoria Park Ave., just south of Kingston Road.

The TTC also provided four buses for people to use to warm up.
The main evacuation area encompasses about eight square blocks from Blantyre Avenue in the east, Kingswood Road to the west, and north of Kingston Road to Gerrard Street East.
The gas leak occurred shortly before 12:30 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 21, when workers reportedly clipped an eight-inch natural gas line near 1068 Kingston Rd.
No one was injured.

In a release issued late Friday afternoon, police urged those in the area to stay away and refrain from using any electric, gas or flame-powered appliances.
