Open letter to Etobicoke-Lakeshore Coun. Mark Grimes:
I am really concerned about losing conveniences and essential services in Etobicoke. I am concerned for the people, especially women and immigrants who will lose their livelihoods. I was born and raised here and am alarmed at how the goods and services I am used to are disappearing due to development. A more comprehensive examination of impacts on existing residents needs to take place in the planning process.
For example, the three malls I use regularly are being redeveloped. They are Humbertown, Six Points, and Cloverdale, all within a radius of about five kilometres. They are easy to access with above-ground parking that makes running in and out fast, easy and safe.

The businesses are generally small, independently owned by women and immigrants. I get great value and product for my money. The rents that will be charged in the redeveloped condo/retail centres prohibit most of these businesses from returning. We will have chain stores instead.
Can a bylaw be passed or a condition of approval be implemented that would keep the commercial rents in these redevelopments at preconstruction levels for a set period of time? These small businesses need to be protected; women and immigrants supported. Some have already been told they don’t fit the new concept image.
As a taxpaying resident, I appreciate the need for new development, but I am not willing to give up all the conveniences that are long standing parts of my community.
