Toronto’s official Christmas tree is huge.
The holiday staple at Nathan Phillips Square stands at more than 15 metres tall and glistens with 12,500 feet of LED lights and 700 individual ornaments.
The tree was lit for the first time at last month’s annual Cavalcade of Lights.
Here are a few more facts about our own piece of the forest adorning the heart of the city.
1. The tree is selected a year in advance near Bancroft, Ont.
2. The tree arrives on a flatbed truck and is lifted into place with cranes. A crew of eight people need three to four hours to put the tree into place.
3. It takes two weeks to decorate and string lights on the tree.
4. Toronto’s Christmas tree does not need watering.
5. The tree is usually a white spruce.
